Our Due Diligence is Your Peace of Mind
We take organic certification very seriously. There are many organic “certifications” out there. So many in fact that as a consumer, separating the real from the “green washed” certifications can be extremely difficult.
At Fashion and Earth, we have chosen to limit our organic certification requirements for cotton to two standards, specifically, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and SAOS (Soil Association Organic Standard).
We have done extensive research in the area of organic certification and these two standards are without a doubt the most comprehensive standards in the world. These two standards have very specific and clearly defined requirements such as:
- Synthetic pesticides are not allowed;
- Synthetic fertilizers are not allowed;
- Toxic substances such as formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, chlorine, chloro-phenols, heavy metals, halogenated solvents, amine releasing azo dyes, etc are not allowed at any stages of production;
- Wastewater treatment of discharge is required;
- Organic cotton must never be mixed with conventional cotton;
- Very specific end product chemical quality standards;
- Child labour is not allowed;
- Very specific fair trade criteria are defined.
These two standards are very detailed, encompass both environmental and social requirements and are very stringently audited and enforced right from the farm to the end user.
There are many other organic clothing certifications out there but in our opinion these two certifications are the “real deal”. All our organic cotton suppliers must be certified by these standards or we don’t carry their products, simple as that.
That’s why we like to say “our due diligence is your peace of mind” because you can be rest assured that the products you are buying genuinely help make our world a better place.
